Located on the River Thames at Woolich Reach is the Thames Barrier. It's the world's 2nd largest movable flood barrier. The Thames Barrier was designed by Rendel, Palmer and Tritton for the GLC. Work began in 1974 and was largely completed in 1982.

This image is taken at twilight on a very cold winter evening.
