Bamburgh Castle

Bamburgh Castle with breaking wave

The castle is built on a Basalt outcrop. The castle has had many addition and restorations in the past but the first record of it dates from AD 547 as the seat of Anglo Saxon ruler Ida and was the capital of British Kingdom Bryneich (Bernica).

The name Bamburgh can be traced back to the wife of Ida's grandson Ęthelfrith who gave the castle to his wife Bebba - an early name of the castle being Bebbanburgh.
